Miss
Vera got her start as Miss Bridget, the Cookie Lady, selling cookies from camp to
camp. These
marvelous, multi-purpose cookies are just the ticket for encampment
snacking. Serve them to the ladies for a refreshing afternoon tea.
Sweets go so well with a freshly brewed cream tea.
Those soldier boys just love something sweet and homemade, it makes them misty eyed and reminiscent of home and Mother dear. Be kind and supportive of our boys in Blue/Gray, and give them a sweet change from salt pork and hard tack.
These also make wonderful trade and/or bribery material that no civilian should be without! If you want to cross that picket line you will need a basket of these goodies to substitute for the proper passes. Also useful in rewarding youngsters for hauling water and wood
Ingredients:
Mix butter and sugars until fluffy, add 2 eggs and molasses, mix until well blended. Add spices and baking soda. Mix in 2-3 cups of flour then mix in rest of flour alternatively with the rum to keep the dough from getting too stiff.
Drop rounded spoonfuls onto cookie sheet and press with bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Or use cookie dough pressing gun for faster, easier baking. Bake at 350° . I forget how long I baked them, 7-10 minutes? The longer they cook the crispier they get. Cool before storing. They keep very well.
