The Civil War Letters of Jakob Weiss

Camp Delaware

October 5, 1862

Dearest parents,

I feel that I should write to you again, even if I wrote twice but have not received an answer from you.  In the second letter I sent you the papers for the bounty, but I do not know if you got that letter, therefore I ask you to answer this one.

I want to tell you what I have been doing.  Two weeks ago yesterday we left Cleveland and arrived in the evening in Cincinnati and left the same night for Covington which is across the Ohio river from Cincinnati and there we stayed 2 days.  In a "Borungervter" formation there we marched 2 ½ miles south.  On this march many men could not continue we marched 8 miles to make these 2 ½ miles.  Last Thursday we left Camp for Cincinnati and then to the camp where we are now.  How long we will stay here I do not know.  But it is possible that we will come through Alliance when we leave here.  There is talk that the war will soon be over, but how much is true I don’t know.  I am not feeling well right now but I hope I will soon be better.  We have a good camp here, good beer to drink and a good creek to wash in.  The huts are like those in camp Cleveland, but not quite as comfortable.  I hope you will answer this letter as soon as you get it.  I send you greeting and remain your faithful son.

Jakob Weiss

P.S.  I wish you could send me some money.
