About
Me

Vatican, May 1976. On leave from U.S. Army while stationed in Germany

Name: Stephen P. Haws (aka SPH, Steve)

Religious Affiliation: The "One True Church" ( aka Catholic aka RCC aka "Whore"/"Whore of Babylon" )

Profession: Attorney

Location: Located in Northern California on I-5. Surrounded by volcanoes (Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen) and apparently now sitting on a fault line (several earthquakes over Thanksgiving 1998 shook things up quite a bit.) Looks like I'll have a front row seat for the Grand Finale in the Last Days. At least the seat is first class.

How Discovered Religion-on-the-Web: While surfing the web late Summer of 1998 researching bulletin boards for a business project I was involved in with a couple of friends. Now spend way too much time surfing through all of the wonderful Catholic sites; keep discovering new sites almost every day.

Personal "Testimony" or History: Born into a nominal Mormon family. Can remember my Mormon baptism at the age of 8, a dunking in a kind of indoor swimming pool. Remember receiving a plaque with 8 pennies. Remember attending Church a few times with my saintly Mormon paternal grandmother.

Was introduced to the Holy Catholic Faith at around the age of 10 by my Catholic step-father. Attended Catechism on Saturdays. Would complain that with school every weekday, Catechism on Saturday and Mass on Sunday, I never had a day off. Don't really recall my Catholic Baptism, First Confession or even my First Communion, but I do recall my Confirmation by the Bishop of Sacramento.

Step-father was killed in an auto accident just a few years after marrying my mom.. Mom was never very religious in an organized sense, so eventually stopped attending Church regularly...my first "dormant" period.

Religious fervor reawakened while attending Junior College in early 70's with the religious movements on campus. My first introduction to apologetics, where I tried to defend the faith as best I could. A very amateur effort.

Entered another "dormant" period during law school and subsequent practice in the 80's. Would attend Mass only once or twice a year. But in all that time I never stopped considering myself Catholic and part of the Holy Church, and it seems like I thought of Christ and the Church almost everyday.

I'm back now, a soldier for Christ and the Holy Catholic Church.

And I credit the Sacrament of Confirmation for keeping me close and not letting me go completely.

Long Term Goal: To bring the world to Christ and the One True Church.

Immediate Goal: To awaken the sleeping giant of dormant/nominal Catholicism; to stop "leakage" from the Church; to recover every single one of the lost Catholics whom anti-Catholics brag are now in their churches. In short, to begin a new counter-reformation. Really like the idea of using the web to "inoculate" the faithful from the cults. Want to have a Church-wide awareness of the wonderful Catholic sites on the web, down to every parish and Catholic home.

Favorite Saint: St. Ignatius Loyola, responded to call "Exsurge Domine" ("Arise, O Lord"), Papal Bull of Leo X, issued June 15, 1520.

Benefit of Discovering Religion-on-the-Web: After long hiatus have now gone back to reading Scripture and returned to the Church more fully. Have a Bible in my top desk drawer. Also, wasn't previously aware of the amount of anti-Catholicism out there.

Purpose on Various Boards: Not sure. Maybe to hone debating skills.

Debating Ability: D. But working on it.

My Current Best Idea: To put my lengthier debate responses on a page such as this, maybe begin a kind of religious web site myself. (Already being done! Began "Examining Protestantism!" in February 1999.)

Life Lesson as for Religion Board Debates: My experience as an attorney has taught me that no matter how brilliant and correct your legal brief, you can be sure that your opponent will ALWAYS file an opposing brief (no matter how frivolous or incorrect.)
