A special category of anti-Catholic propaganda sites claim that the Crucifix on the Pope's staff is the "Bent Cross"…a Satanic symbol. So I did a web search on the "Bent Cross" to determine the validity of this claim. Is the so-called "Bent Cross" a Satanic Symbol? My first step was to confirm that the "Bent Cross" is, in fact, a Satanic symbol. The following sites are representative of those produced in my web searches which promote the Satanic symbol claim (I link you to their articles): The Cutting Edge | Jesus-Is-Lord | Lou's Clues | The Revelation All of these sites refer to The Cutting Edge article as their "authority", quoting The Cutting Edge article virtually verbatim. So, what does The Cutting Edge use as its authority? For the answer to that question, let us turn to a Roman Catholic author, Piers Compton, writing in his book, "The Broken Cross: Hidden Hand In the Vatican", Channel Islands, Neville Spearman, 1981. Of course, anti-Catholic propagandists use "Catholic authorities" only when they have something damaging against the Church. I suspect that this Catholic author is a disgruntled "Traditionalist" Catholic who sees the "smoke of Satan" in Vatican 2. The Cutting Edge is using this Catholic author, Piers Compton, as its authority. Let's see what Mr. Compton has to say, as quoted by The Cutting Edge. This Bent Crucifix is "... a sinister symbol, used by Satanists in the sixth century, that had been revived at the time of Vatican Two. This was a bent or broken cross, on which was displayed a repulsive and distorted figure of Christ, which the black magicians and sorcerers of the Middle Ages had made use of to represent the Biblical term 'Mark of the Beast'. Yet, not only Paul VI, but his successors, the two John-Pauls, carried that object and held it up to be revered by crowds, who had not the slightest idea that it stood for anti-Christ." (p. 72) On page 56 Compton prints a picture of the current Pope, John Paul II, holding this bent or broken cross, just as we have shown, at left. What does Mr. Compton provide as HIS authority establishing that the "Bent Cross" is a sixth century Satanic symbol? Nothing! Nada! Zip! No references to any historical work supporting his claim. All we have is Mr. Compton's naked statement. If Mr. Compton referred to some historical source, The Cutting Edge would certainly highlight and quote from that source…and not rely solely on Mr. Compton's work. The article basically admits that modern Satanists do not use the "Bent Cross"; would not recognize it as such. My web search confirmed this. A perusal of several sites on Satanic symbols turned up nothing on the "Bent Cross", other than The Cutting Edge and like sites listed above. Even Symbols.Com, which mentions St. Peter's Cross as used by Satanists (see my article, JP2 & the "Inverted Cross" Chair), does not mention a "Bent Cross". The ultimate proof that the "Bent Cross" is not now, and probably never has been, a Satanic symbol are our anti-Catholic propaganda sites. In its garish and cheesy article on the Inverted Cross (on JP2's Chair), Jesus-Is-Lord has a couple of Satanic graphics and many supporting sources. Yet Jesus-Is-Lord has no similar Satanic graphics or sources supporting its "Bent Cross" article. Why is that? The "repulsive and distorted figure of Christ" This is little more than the power of suggestion. In my opinion, the figure of Christ is neither repulsive nor distorted. I suspect the Pope uses this "bent" Crucifix because it aesthetically fits as a part of a staff. But art is in the eye of the beholder. ************************ More proof is needed to establish that the "Bent Cross" is even a Satanic symbol. If you have further information, please email me or post it on my message board. Thanks. One more point. Although the Crucifix is slightly curved or "bent" for aesthetic purposes on the staff, it clearly is not "broken". I suspect that the reference to "a bent or broken" cross is to bootstrap a "bent" cross into the category of "broken" cross. Afterall, Mr. Compton's book is called, The Broken Cross. Special Note David Bay - Director of Cutting Edge Ministries was in Army Intelligence for four years. With that background, you'd think he would have checked Mr. Compton's sources (or lack thereof) more carefully. Or perhaps Mr. Bay was in the Propaganda Section of Army Intelligence? J The name, The Cutting Edge, tells us something. It's waaaay out there, baby! J
