CFIDS stands for Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome.

COMPLEX AND SERIOUS DISEASE
CFIDS is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) in other countries. It is a complex and serious disease that affects the entire body. Although the cause of CFIDS is not known, it is currently the focus of intense worldwide research.

RAINBOW OF DIAGNOSES
A number of diagnoses fit into the category of CFIDS, they are: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), Chronic Mycoplasma Infections, Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). These diseases share similar symptoms, course and diagnostic patterns, treatment modalities, and research. What is beneficial for one disease can often be applicable to another.

RECOGNIZED BY GOVERNMENT
CFIDS is recognized by United States governmental agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institutes for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NAIAD), and the Social Security Administration (SSA). In March, 1995, the CDC listed CFIDS as a "Priority 1" disease of the "New and Emerging Infectious Disease" category.

DEMOGRAPHICS
CFIDS affects people of all ages, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. However, most cases occur in women between the ages of 25 and 45. Various studies have estimated that from 500,000 to one million adults in the U.S. have CFIDS. It is one of the most prevalent chronic illnesses and is growing at an alarming rate!
