There are some
popular teachings on the subject of eating clean and unclean meats, which
claim that Jesus declared all meats clean. What does the Bible teach about
clean or unclean meats?
In
Genesis
7:1-3. “And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into
the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Of
every clean beast
thou shalt take to thee by sevens,
the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male
and his female. Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female;
to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.” So the LORD started
out in Genesis with the separation between clean and unclean beasts.
This was long before there were Jews, Priests or Moses proclaiming and
writing down the statutes, code and Laws.
In
Malachi
3:6,
“For I am the LORD, I change
not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” From this text
we learn that what the LORD has written in the Old Testament, would still
stand in the New. We just need to learn the reason why it is so important
to understand what the LORD is requesting us to do, and why He requires
us to eat clean and pure food. After all He is preparing a Holy People,
to live in His presence in the heavenly atmosphere. If there was a spot
of uncleanness in us, we could not survive His presence, which is healing
to those who have purified themselves, and destructive to those who have
sin still hidden their hearts, as in lust of the flesh or lust for the
flesh pots of Egypt.
Jesus
gave us the command in Matthew 4:4. “But he answered and said,
It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” What the LORD had given us in Genesis,
is just as important as what He is telling us in Revelation. If
we take the Bible as a whole from Genesis to Revelation,
we shall discover the truth that sets us free. Not free to sin, but free
to live in righteousness and obedience.
So
God’s Word is what should be our authority, and we need to understand
God’s perspective instead of relying on human reasoning. When God told
Noah to take clean and unclean into the Ark, Noah understood the instruction
and the distinction between the animals, and he obeyed without question.
So obviously this was not the first time that the difference between clean
and unclean had been brought forth. After the flood Noah sacrificed only
clean animals, of which he had taken 7 pairs onto the Ark. Would a Pig
have been sacrificed, then would the Pig be accepted instead of a Lamb?
If so then John the Baptist could never have stated, as he did in John
1:29.
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold
the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
The
law is spiritual, as in Romans 7:14, “For we know that the law
is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.” When we have a
loving relationship with our LORD, we don’t look for loopholes to avoid
obeying His commandments. In fact we enjoy a loving relationship, and seek
to keep his commandments which are based on LOVE. These commandments also
include the food laws in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14,
which exist for our benefit and health.
Abraham
kept the laws, statutes, and his attitude was of trust and sincere obedience.
He lived long before the Old Covenant when Israel was established, which
Jesus said in
Matthew 5:18, “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven
and earth pass, one jot
or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
God’s
instructions were to “be holy,” which includes not eating of
the unclean things, “For thou art an holy
people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee
to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon
the earth. Thou shalt not
eat any abominable thing.” Deuteronomy 14:2-3.
When
Jesus came to die on the cross, after which He became our High Priest,
and His ministry replaced the Levitical priesthood, this is called the
New Covenant. Hebrews 8:8-10. “For finding fault with them, he
saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when
I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the
house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers
in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of
Egypt; because they continued
not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For
this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those
days, saith the Lord; I will
put my laws into their mind, and write
them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall
be to me a people.” He wants to write His laws into our minds and hearts,
where we will love to follow his commandments and laws!
Then
living a righteous life, having been set free as Paul tells us in Romans
6:22-23.
“But now being made free
from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness,
and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift
of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” When we grasp
this wonderful principle, we joyfully keep all the precepts, which help
us to avoid the unclean in the physical, moral and spiritual realm.
The
unclean animals were created for a purpose, they are generally the “garbage
cans” and their work is to clean up the earth, and pigs will eat just
about anything. There is a principal that we are what we eat, and if we
eat unclean food, then we will also be unclean.
Mark
7:19. “Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and
goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?” The word “meats”
<broma>? Greek - “All meats. All
food; all that is taken into the body to support life. The meaning
is, that the economy or process by which life is supported, purifies or
renders nutritious all kinds of food. The unwholesome parts are separated,
and the wholesome only are taken into the system. This agrees with all
that has since been discovered of the process of digestion, and of the
support of life. The food taken into the stomach is, by the gastric juice,
converted into a thick pulp, called chyme. The nutritious part of this
is conveyed into small vessels and changed into a milky substance called
chyle. This is changed into blood, and the blood conveys nutriment and
support to all parts of the system. The useless parts of the food are thrown
off.” Barnes Commentary, SwordSearcher.
Meats
in the Bible can mean all food, or just food as does not always tell you
whether it is clean or unclean. Broma is used to simply mean food,
where the Greek word kreas is used where meat or animal flesh is
specifically intended. So the above passage has to do with food rather
than meat. The whole argument of course started over “unwashed hands.
(Romans 14:21; 1 Corinthians 13:8.)”
Mark
7:19, KJV. “Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly,
and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?” But in the New
International Version, Mark 7:19, it adds: “For it doesn't
go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body." (In
saying this, Jesus declared all foods ‘clean.’)” This
has been added by man, it not part of the original King James Bible,
it just is not there. At least they put in parentheses as some changes
in the newer versions they have not done this, and thus give a wrong idea
or teaching. So are you going
to trust man or trust the whole Bible, and prepare yourself to be holy
so you can live in a holy heavenly atmosphere.
Exodus
15:26. “And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the
LORD thy God, and wilt do
that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments,
and keep all his statutes, I
will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought
upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth
thee.” Now here is
the real reason for eating only clean meat, and here at the end of the
world with the animal kingdom diseased and sick, it is best to not even
eat clean dead meat. As the promise is that none of the diseases will come
upon those who follow the His commandments and keep His statutes!
Isaiah
66:15-18, “For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots
like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames
of fire. For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh:
and the slain of the LORD shall be many. They that sanctify themselves,
and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating
swine's flesh, and the abomination,
and the mouse, shall
be consumed together, saith the LORD. For I know their works and their
thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and
they shall come, and see my glory.”
Now
this text is the clincher, in that it shows how the LORD will judge those
who hide in the groves “eating swine’s flesh,” and like they do in
some countries in eating “the mouse.” In fact some of the horrible
diseases plaguing man, are caused by eating of unclean meat, or other toxic
food and medicines. The statement “those who hide in the groves,” is
where they practiced idiolatry in worshiping the Sun or Moon God, still
practiced in the world today. As Solomon said, “there is nothing new
under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9.
Psalm 19:7. “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” JDC
